Most notably, the year saw English Whisky secure Geographical Indication (GI) status, formally recognising and protecting the category's unique identity. The milestone represents an important moment in the evolution of English Whisky and provides a strong platform for future development, both in the UK and internationally.

The Annual Review brings together industry data, market insights and highlights from across the sector, showcasing the contribution English Whisky makes to local economies, tourism, employment and exports.

Among the key findings:

  • More than 70 English Whisky distilleries are now operating across England.

  • Around 500,000 people visited English Whisky distilleries over the past year.

  • The sector supports 488 full-time jobs.

  • English Whisky is enjoyed in more than 30 export markets worldwide.

  • The value of maturing whisky stocks has reached an estimated £1.25 billion.

  • Around 90% of producers make Single Malt English Whisky.

The review also highlights the growing collaboration across the industry and the Guild's continued work to represent, support and promote English Whisky producers.

Morag Garden, Chief Executive of the English Whisky Guild, said:

"This year's Annual Review captures an important moment for English Whisky. The achievement of Geographical Indication status is a landmark milestone that recognises the quality, authenticity and distinctiveness of our category. Alongside this achievement, we continue to see investment in distilleries, growing visitor numbers and increasing recognition of English Whisky in markets around the world. Together, these developments demonstrate the strength and ambition of our sector. We are incredibly proud of what has been achieved and look forward to working with our members and partners to continue building the reputation of English Whisky at home and abroad."

As the category continues to establish itself on the global whisky stage, the 2026 Annual Review provides a snapshot of a sector that is increasingly confident, collaborative and recognised for its quality and innovation.
