Our Winter 2025 distillery focus is Spirit of Yorkshire
What does English Whisky mean to you?
To us, English Whisky means identity over imitation - respecting tradition but doing things our own way, to create something delicious, rooted in where it is made.
What makes your whisky (and distillery) unique within the English Whisky sphere?
Single estate from field to bottle. We’re farmers (since 1945), brewers (since 2003) and distillers (since 2016). 100% homegrown barley in every drop of whisky we make is something few distilleries anywhere in the world, including Scotland, can say. We’re family friends and flavour-led, respecting tradition but doing it our own way.
When we first had the idea of Yorkshire single malt using our homegrown barley, Tom and Dave, the co-founders, were clear that this was about creating something delicious and distinctive. We really respect the history, heritage and knowledge of distillers in Scotland, but it’s not helpful to anyone to directly copy or replicate Scotch here. We have a unique still set up, advised by the late great Dr Jim Swan, which utilises a four-plate copper rectifying column, which we use alongside our two pot stills for half of the year. This freedom gives us the flexibility of two spirit styles, creating a unique style of whisky that is light, fruity and creamy.
What is the achievement that you are most proud of?
Earlier this year, out of the blue, we received an email from the IWSC saying we were one of their top 50 spirits producers in the world. Number 45, we were the only English distillery on the list, alongside some really big and established names. We were absolutely delighted, and it’s really boosted our confidence going into the new year!
What do you think will be the biggest challenge for English Whisky as we look towards 2026?
To flip this round (and sort of answer in the same way), the biggest challenge for English Whisky is also its most exciting opportunity. As the category grows, the focus shifts from being new to being established. As the saying goes, “a rising tide lifts all boats,” and with us entering our tenth year of production in 2026, we’re looking ahead to a year of releases that truly showcase our passion for what we’re making and how. Rising costs and growing demand mean smarter planning and stronger collaboration across the industry, allowing English Whisky to grow as a more connected, community-driven category, ultimately strengthening how we are understood and appreciated by drinkers both at home and around the world.
Longer term – how do you assess the future for English Whisky?
The long-term future of English Whisky looks positive; there is confidence surrounding English Whisky and a growing sense that it is finding its own voice.
The real marker of success is not speed but intent; distilleries laying down stock with care for the long term, and allowing their character to develop over time. As English Whisky continues to age, the conversation is shifting, and drinkers want to explore the category more. This leads to repurchasing, choosing English Whisky not just for its flavour but for its provenance. Flavour-forward whisky and storytelling are now more important than ever, as every purchase is carefully considered. It allows for potential in international markets, where curiosity is at the forefront.
Perhaps the most encouraging thing is the collective spirit within the English Whisky industry, and wider ‘World Whisky Category.’ Collaborations and shared learning, with a commitment to quality, are helping the category grow together, creating a stronger, more sustainable future that is recognised and enjoyed simply as great whisky.
